History

Eglin AFB was founded in 1935 with the name Valparaiso Bombing and Gunnery Base. During its first seven years, the station served as a training center for the Army Air Corps. Later, in 1942, it was repurposed as an Army Air Corps weapons center and testing site.

After World War II, the facility was renamed Eglin Air Force Base in memory of Lieutenant Colonel Frederick I. Eglin, who lost his life in 1937 when the Northrop A-17 aircraft he was traveling in crashed between Langley and Maxwell Field, Alabama.

In reaction to Soviet threats during the Cold War, the facility was charged with creating, managing, and testing warheads. The facility later became a leader in developing new missile techniques and technologies. Ten distinct fields were built at the base over the following several years for testing new flight systems and training tactics.

The fields are scattered throughout the base and are still in operation today. They feature engravings showcasing the names of US war heroes from various eras.
