Tyndall's primary mission is to train and educate airpower students in support of U.S. Air Force objectives by providing an environment for learning and developing combat capability to organize, equip, train, and educate airmen for worldwide deployment in support of U.S. interests.
The base has about 2,072 military personnel from all over the world visiting one of its tenant units annually for temporary duty or permanent party assignments.

The history of Tyndall Air Force Base dates back to the early days of World War II.
In 1940, the United States Army Air Corps established a training base in Panama City, Florida. The name of the base was changed to Tyndall Field in honor of Major William J. Tyndall, who had been killed in an aircraft crash in 1935.
Pilots were trained at Tyndall Field during World War II before heading overseas to fight against Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. At its peak during this period, more than 10,000 men were stationed at the base.
After World War II ended, Tyndall Field was used as a separation center for returning service members before they were discharged from active duty. In 1947, the base was reactivated as a training facility for recruits undergoing basic military training.
During the Cold War era (1947-1991), Tyndall Air Force Base underwent several changes in its mission as new types of aircraft were introduced into service with the U.S. Air Force (USAF).
In 1950, Pilot training became the primary mission of Tyndall when it was designated as one of three USAF pilot training bases in the United States; In 1951, The first class of female pilots graduated from Tyndall; In 1954, Tyndall became an air defense base and began training fighter interceptor crews for Strategic Air Command (SAC) B-47 Strat jet wings.
During the Cold War, Tyndall was home to one of only three USAF F-15E Strike Eagle training squadrons in existence at that time. It was also home to F-16 fighter training squadrons from 1982 until 2002, when they were closed due to post-9/11 budget cuts.
In 2002, Tyndall saw its first post-9/11 mission change when it became home to three F-22 Raptor fighter squadrons 1st Fighter Squadron and 71st Fighter Squadron. In addition, the 325th Fighter Wing was activated as a combat unit to support Operation Iraqi Freedom.
